Officials from Hamas had gathered in the Qatari capital of Doha in recent days for the funeral of Ismail Haniyeh, the former head of its political bureau who was assassinated in Tehran on July 30th, and closed-door discussions over who would take his job. Though Mr Sinwar has become the dominant figure in the group since the attacks on southern Israel, he had not been expected to accede to the top position himself.
