This lack of recognition is the art world’s fault, not Gibson’s. The mainstream contemporary art system has had a long-running blind spot regarding work by Indigenous Americans. Regional institutions—including the in Hanover, New Hampshire; the ; and the in Phoenix—have been showing this category in-depth for decades. But well-funded museums in major coastal cities began in earnest only about five years ago.
