SEC’s Climate Compromise Deserves Support

Some disclosures are more valuable than others.

The battle has already been intense, and it’s not over. Two years after proposing a much more aggressive set of mandates, attracting some 24,000 comments, the SEC watered down the final rule. It dropped the most onerous and controversial requirement, which would’ve required some companies to report emissions produced by their customers and suppliers. That decision was welcomed by businesses but criticized by environmental activists, who say that such emissions are often the largest part of a company’s pollution.
