Would building 1.5m homes bring down British house prices?

His party has promised 1.5m new homes in England over this parliament to alleviate the housing crisis. That would represent a 27% increase in the number of new homes built over the past five years. It is a target that has not been hit in decades (see chart). But assume, for argument’s sake, that it is met. Would that make housing more affordable?
