Jardine, who’s 60, has been living at Brookwood for 15 years, and working there, too. She spends a few hours a day in the ceramics shop, where she glazes bowls, platters and souvenirs the nonprofit sells to the public. She’s paid a piece rate that translates to about $1 to $3 an hour, depending on how much glazing she gets done. Brookwood is exempt from paying her the federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour because of her disability. Each year, the nonprofit pays a total of about $350,000 to 250 employees with disabilities. The workers help grow flowers in its greenhouse, serve food in its restaurant and craft its reindeer-shaped Christmas candles. Brookwood says the pay for these jobs reflects the workers’ productivity.
