Those attitudes seem to have been replaced by a new kind of manhood, a chaotic one, borne of the vast online space known as the manosphere. During his campaign, Trump cannily courted the online heroes of young men: Joe Rogan, the Nelk Boys, Logan and Jake Paul, Adin Ross. Clips circulated of Tucker Carlson referring to Trump, bizarrely, as “daddy” and to America as a “bad little girl” due for a “vigorous spanking.” Trump’s manly man bona fides were reinforced by the viral image of him raising his fist defiantly after being shot at by a sniper. Not for nothing, his 20-year-old male shooter was later described variously as confused and lonely, and he was said to have been bullied in high school—characteristics common in boys who spend a lot of time in online spaces.
