College students (or, more likely, their parents), who have bills that can easily run to four figures, are likely to feel the pinch, with many dorm room essentials among the goods hit hardest by tariffs. That’s according to a Bloomberg Businessweek analysis of federal trade data for April and May, when a 10% duty kicked in for most countries, as did a short-lived but still painful additional 125% rate on China. Countries including Japan, South Korea and the UK, along with the European Union, that rushed to negotiate bilateral trade pacts were able to secure lower tariff rates than those the administration initially threatened on “Liberation Day,” but many others are still at risk of punishingly high duties.
