I had always pictured Wordsworth wandering “lonely as a cloud” beside a docile little pond. So when we arrived on an August morning in 2016, I was stunned to discover that the region is dominated by mountains. On the last day of the trip, we decided to climb one: a pyramid of slate called Skiddaw.
