Shell-shocked and exhausted after a week on the front lines, Newsom holed up at home with a bottle of tequila and one of his closest friends, Doug Hendrickson. “He was getting absolutely massacred by everybody,” Hendrickson recalls. “Like it was his fault, the whole thing.
