My fears about my daughter are probably at least partly also a projection. I’m addicted to my phone, compulsively emailing, texting, Slacking and refreshing everything else. So my wife and I were reasonably cautious: We got her a TCL Flip Go, a $60 clamshell that looks like the first phone I got, when I started college 25 years ago. It has a prepaid SIM card that allows Alice to make calls, send texts and do pretty much nothing else. It’s a dumb phone, in other words—the only tech device I felt I could give my child without enduring the ire of my parent-friends, most of whom seem taken, in one way or another, by the budding tech abstinence movement.
