Buildings like Pal’s are reshaping city renting in the UK. From London to Manchester, Bristol to Birmingham and Leeds, amenity-rich build-to-rent (BTR) blocks of apartments and co-living schemes (where residents rent “micro-studios”) have added 99,000 homes to the rental market in the past five years, according to Savills. Dominated by young professionals, these schemes now make up nearly one in four rental homes in Manchester, and one in five in certain London boroughs, according to Savills. A further 159,000 homes in BTR schemes are either under construction, have received or are seeking planning permission.
