Last autumn, it was awarded the Royal Horticultural Society’s Overseas Partner Garden of the Year; it is far more than that. I am ashamed to have delayed for so long before visiting it. It is a living testimony to the culture of its makers, who were gardeners and book collectors too, and the value of opening a garden to beauty across the world.
