The striking increase in public profanity in the past few years has been aided by an American political administration that likes to shove etiquette rules aside. This has come as a surprise to those of us who are used to Americans keeping things clean. When I moved to California in 2018 I heard almost no bad language. Instead of swearing, my new friends would say things like “jeez” and “oh my gosh”. It suddenly made sense why iPhones autocorrected certain words to duck and ducking.
