His wife, also a colleague at his institution, has left him. This has led him to Helen’s house, “in the middle of nowhere”, where he imagines he might live a “simpler life” and find meaning in the natural world. What he finds is Helen’s realtor (and, we soon learn, her old friend and protégé), who shows him around and tells him about Helen, who is now apparently in an assisted living facility.
