The snowdrop is rich with symbolism. Its winter flecks of white, untroubled by frost and snow, are a harbinger of warmer months and longer days, lighting up rural verges and urban parks – and inviting a cult-like following. Over the next month, enthusiasts will pay pilgrimage to the hardy perennial across public and private gardens, which open their doors for snowdrop festivals, woodland walks and specialist plant sales. The National Garden Scheme alone has 120 snowdrop gardens listed in its winter openings.
