The Plum Village tradition and community have become an important part of my own life, and on Sunday, I listened to an online dharma talk by Brother Chan Phap Hu’u, the monastery’s current abbot and former attendant to Nhat Hanh. A dharma talk, which Nhat Hanh described as “a practice . . . that waters good seeds in us”, is an offering of reflection, insights and teachings from the Buddhist tradition. Known as “Thay” to his students, Nhat Hanh taught Engaged Buddhism, a practice of bringing mindfulness and compassion to every part of daily life. Phap Hu’u discussed the many ways that having had Nhat Hanh as a teacher continues to shape both his life and that of the community.
