After a short delay to the Jolts survey due to another government shutdown in the US, the data for December arrived on Thursday. It showed a sharper weakening in labour demand. The total number of job openings between September and December declined by more than 1mn, from more than 7.6mn in September to 6.5mn in December. Forecasters had expected the data to show 7.2mn openings in December.
