Berg has made films about Janis Joplin and the actor Evan Rachel Wood, and was Oscar-nominated for her 2006 documentary about abuse in the Catholic Church, Deliver Us from Evil. Every time she was between projects, though, she contacted Buckley’s mother, Mary Guibert, and tried to secure permission from the artist’s estate to tell his story.
