There is a further twist. Until recently, Nigel Farage’s Reform UK had appeared to be a peculiarly English phenomenon. Its nationalism is different to the kind that dominates Scottish politics in the form of an SNP government: Farage’s brand is harsher, less generous in spirit, more nativist. In a Scotland where debate has tended to be between centre-left and further left, it was unthinkable that Faragism could gain a foothold.
