Economic growth has slowed worryingly in the past few years, not helped by the bloodshed and disruption during the revolt that forced Sheikh Hasina’s flight to India. Under her Awami League’s rule, billions of dollars were allegedly diverted out of Bangladeshi banks, and the central bank has estimated that around a quarter of their loans are non-performing. The country’s dependence on garment exports is risky even after this month’s deal with the Trump administration removed US tariffs on some clothing. Manufacturers fret about Bangladesh’s scheduled “graduation” from UN Least Developed Country status in November, which will mean losing trade preferences in some European and other nations.
