The choreographer-dancers and collaborators Rashaun Mitchell and Silas Riener first came to prominence twenty years ago, as standout members of the last iteration of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company. More recently, they have taken up Cunningham’s fascination with technology, keeping pace with the latest technical advances in service of an explicitly queer sensibility. Their newest work, “Open Machine,” imagines artificial intelligence through the lens of experimental dance. A cast of ultra-exact movers follows algorithm-like rules in a partly virtual world. The score is by the electronic-music composer Mas Ysa and by the vocalist Charmaine Lee, whose extended voice techniques conjure avant-garde beatboxing.—Brian Seibert (N.Y.U.
