That resolute serenity was very much reflected in a speech that their Prime Minister, Mark Carney, gave two days later, at the World Economic Forum, in Davos, Switzerland—a speech that I think may have been the most clear-eyed from any world leader so far during the second Trump era. It was widely hailed at its delivery, receiving a standing ovation in Davos, but a week later it seems ever more significant, a kind of charter for the bleak years ahead, and to be read with a kind of deeper longing after the events of the past few days, culminating in the Minneapolis killing of Alex Pretti. The more I’ve re-read the speech, the more it seems to offer a few clues about how a chastened America (assuming we are ever chastened) might somehow fit back into a global order.
