This, of course, is not a new problem: thirty years ago, in this magazine, Mark Singer chronicled the efforts of the so-called Supermom, the formerly high-flying professional who, having dropped out of the workplace as a partner in a law or architectural firm, transferred her professional skill set to the complexities of child rearing, with inputs (intensive tutoring, sports teams, brain-building hobbies) producing the desired outputs (high SAT scores leading to a job as high-powered as the one Mom used to have). Today’s new mothers have other cultural stereotypes to aspire to, or reject, like the Pinterest mom, cheerfully crafting with her children who remain uncontaminated by screen culture, and the trad wife, that modern-day Stepford type whose energies are devoted to homemaking and family-building from the get-go, with nary a thought given to establishing personal or professional independence.
