Mr. Walther, a former partner at Goldman Sachs, is best known as a leading collector of photography and video art. Last May, he promised the Metropolitan Museum of Art more than 6,500 works from his collection. Billed as a “landmark” gift, in a news release, the Met wrote that Mr. Walther had “assembled one of the most distinguished private collections of photography in the world.”
