“The Love That Remains” follows the family for roughly a year, as the seasons pass and they try to sort out what it means to still be a family now. Most of what we observe is quotidian. They eat dinner together sometimes. They go on a picnic by the water. They hike up rocky hills. Magnus occasionally stays overnight — sometimes on the couch and sometimes in Anna’s bed, though Anna doesn’t want to “confuse” the children. Anna is an artist whose latest work consists of sheet metal cut into giant geometric shapes, then laid on canvases outdoors, where the elements can slowly corrode the material and leave a mark behind. (That’s a metaphor.)
