Like generational New York peers such as the Patti Smith Group or the Ramones, Television was often described as one of the fundamental early punk acts. Mr. Verlaine and the band’s guitarist, Richard Lloyd, often played with aggressive dissonance, and Mr. Verlaine’s vocals verged on shouting or wailing.
