Washington cherry lore has abounded since his death in 1799, when the Virginia minister Mason Locke Weems wrote a fictionalized biography that included a false tale about the future president’s childhood assault on a cherry tree and subsequent confession. That story is still used to demonstrate Washington’s unimpeachable honesty.
