Black beachside communities weren’t unusual at the time. In the 1920s, Black “summer pleasure resorts” existed in other parts of the country, such as Highland Beach in Maryland and Joyland, an amusement park in Chicago, but the combination did not exist in New York. Thus, Black Harlemites traveled to Rockaway Beach in Queens for segregated seaside leisure. Mr. Riley set out to change this.
