The young singer-songwriter Scout (Aleyse Shannon) thinks she’s finally about to get a long-awaited break after the sleek Donna (Stefanie Estes), a controversial tech tycoon, invites her to the recording facility she’s built in the middle of a desert. The remote studio, named Decibel, has been designed from the ground up to find a “perfect frequency” by tapping directly into musicians’ emotions and even biorhythms via bracelets that connect them to artificial intelligence and supposedly find undiscovered waveforms. I think? Donna can be hard to parse. “I understand this might feel a bit unconventional,” she tells Scout. “The future always is.” This sounds like the flimflam you tend to hear from Silicon Valley so-called visionaries and disrupters, and it takes a little while for Scout to wise up to what she’s gotten herself into.
