They did need, by passion, to surround themselves with art. An early interest grew into a life-defining vocation, and the Nortons accumulated one of the most significant collections of contemporary art in Los Angeles, numbering, at its peak, about 2,500 works. (They separated in 2000 and later divorced.) Eileen Harris Norton still collects, and her support for curatorial scholarship and social justice causes has been just as consequential.
