The record business is notoriously difficult for female R&B singers, as top-down decisions about material and direction drag on for years. Ms. Lennox’s releases have taken a while to come out, and she’s seen her share of label drama. Her first two albums, 2019’s “Shea Butter Baby” and 2022’s “Age/Sex/Location,” were released via Dreamville Records, an imprint overseen by rap superstar J. Cole. While both were critically acclaimed, she couldn’t get traction on the Billboard charts, and she parted ways with Dreamville in 2025. It remains to be seen if her third LP, “Vacancy” (Interscope), out now, represents a change in her commercial fortunes, but it finds her in a strong place artistically.
