The National Gallery could stage a major conspectus of the life and work of Joseph Wright of Derby (1734-1797). Birth amid the early Industrial Revolution, training with Joshua Reynolds’s teacher, and a budget visit to see Naples and Vesuvius. Fashionable portraits and moonlit landscapes back home, then success with candlelit interiors and portraits of Wright’s friends in the Lunar Society of Enlightenment scientists. Instead, “From the Shadows” is an ingenious microcosm, focused on the “candlelight” nocturnes of 1765 to 1773, when Wright was present at the creation of our age of science and spectacle.
